■5203  ▼a  Generalizations  are  possible,  and  one  may  find  threads  of  meaning  that  unite  the  various  religious  currents  in  Nicaraguan  culture.  But  religion  in  Nicaragua  is  not  a  simple  or  unitary  phenomenon.  Apart  from  the  well-known  schism  between  the  conservative  church  hierarchy  and  the  revolutionary  Popular  Church,  any  number  of  additional  currents  and  sub-currents  may  be  identified  within  actually  practiced  Catholicism:  influences  that  tend  to  follow  the  variegated  lines  of  region,  ethnicity,  and  social  strata  and  status.  And  when  the  vigorous  new  phenomenon  of  Protestant  fundamentalism  is  accounted  for,  the  picture  becomes  all  the  more  complex.
